The Wildwood Series is based on a year of hiking the Wildwood Trail in Forest Park in Portland. The well-loved trail winds through the park for over 30 miles. Some areas are more urban, with houses glimpsed through the trees, while other areas feel more remote, quiet, and less traveled. Over the course of a year, I took several walks on the trail with camera in hand, observing seasonal changes and steeping myself in the rich, verdant landscape. It was a meditative and restorative experience for me. Returning to the studio with my photos, I worked from the images, making drawings which in turn became the paintings in the series. It is my intent in this work to portray not so much an exact representation of the place, but more a sense of place, and how it makes me feel.
