Statement

My current work reflects a love of the landscape in its seasonal changes. These paintings join the historical context of landscape painters such as Thomas Cole, John Singer Sargent, yet they represent a contemporary look at nature and a universal attraction to its wild beauty. The subject of human response to nature holds a collective appeal. The works illustrate current conditions and the vitality of the landscape. I am intrigued by the mind’s image of nature and the associations, memories and reflections that image invokes. I am also aware of the restorative and meditative qualities nature provides for me.

My work is a collaboration of drawings, photographs, and imagination. I also find other artists to be a great stimulus. Current favorites are April Gornik, Pierre Bonnard, Arthur Dove, Charles Burchfield, and John Singer Sargent. I begin with compositional sketches and paint intuitively. The process of making a painting for me is action and reaction. In the end, I hope to create something thoughtful, enduring, and beautiful.
